Global Issues

There are many global issues that continue to plague people around the world. All of these might not directly impact or relate to each and every person, but that does not mean that they are not important.

This page will explore, and talk about a few global issues, or simply topics in general that we believe are important general knowledge for all to know about.

LGBTQIA+ Community

What is the LGBTQIA+ Community?

"The LGBT community (also known as the LGBTQ+ community, GLBT community, or the gay community) is a loosely defined grouping of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, LGBT organisations, and subcultures, united by a common culture and social movements."

What is the aim of the community?

As a group, the community is generally looked down upon and seen as a minority. The aim is to provide a safe space to all those who do not feel comfortable or safe in heteronormative culture, also known as being cisgender and straight. This means that a person identifies as the sex that they were born with, and feel attraction only towards those of the opposite sex. This is what society defines as 'normal', even though there is nothing abnormal or wrong with not fitting into those molds. The community is a safe space, and a place wherein one can find others like them, and show support to one another.

Why is it important to know about the community?

Being a part of the public, general society, it is automatically very important to be educated about matters concerning the community. It is important for everybody to know and understand the normality of people who are not cisgender and/or straight. Being educated provides chances to show those who are a part of the community that they are welcome everywhere, and to accept them and care for them as any other, to show that there is no difference, and that all people are humans, despite their gender and/or sexual identity.

Russo-Ukraine War

The Russia and Ukraine war is a current and ongoing crisis in Europe. On the 24th of February 2022, Russia declared war on the country of Ukraine and invaded them in an act of aggression. This is considered to be the largest conventional military attack on a European country since World War II.

The invasion included attacks across the Belarus-Ukraine border, and was closely followed by targeted airstrikes on military buildings in the cities of Ukraine. The Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, consequentially reacted by enacting martial law and general mobilisation throughout Ukraine. Throughout Ukraine, air raid sirens could be heard.

Russian president Vladimir Putin's initial goal for the invasion was to entirely overrun the country and end its desire and aim to join the Western defense alliance, NATO. However, since the initial attack, there has been heavy pushback from the country itself, with others all over the world joining in to support Ukraine.

Large leaps of defense are being showed towards Ukraine in its efforts to fight off the invading Russian forces, as countries such as Switzerland make unprecedented moves by breaking its 200-year long neutrality to penalize Moscow and its leaders.

It has also announced the joining of the  European Union (EU) in closing the Swiss airspace to Russian aeroplanes, as well as imposing financial sanctions on Russian President Vladimir Putin and other supporting leaders.

Switzerland is simply one example of a country that is helping Ukraine, as many other countries and their leaders rise in support to the victim country.
